The Scott County Public Defenders’ Office represents individuals who are indigent and have been charged with a crime, certain child custody cases involving the Department of Child Services, and specific contempt matters.
The Public Defenders’ Office is an independently operated governmental agency of Scott County. The agency is directed by a three-member board who are Scott county residents and who can neither be elected or public officials nor have any association with law enforcement. The Board, assisted by the Chief Public Defender, sets office and operational procedures. The Board meets on an as needed basis.
The office of the Recorder was the first Constitutional Office in the county government in Indiana. The county recorder's function is to maintain permanent public records involving a wide variety of instruments. These documents detail transactions involving real estate, mining, personal property, mortgages, liens, leases, subdivision plats, military discharges, personal bonds, etc. {IC 36-2-11-8} Generally, all of these instruments are recorded either for giving legal public notice of their existence or for safekeeping and future reference.
The recorder maintains and preserves all legal documents affecting title to real property. These records are the legal basis for determining ownership. The degree with which the recorder fulfills his or her responsibilities ultimately forms the legal foundation for the institution of private property. The recorder is a member of the county commission on public records, which has authority over the preservation or disposition of all public records maintained by the county. {IC 5-15-6}.
It all started when Congress enacted the Civil Defense Act of 1950, which created the Civil Defense.
The Act was amended in 1979 and created the Federal Emergency Management Agency. States likewise enacted laws that provided for disaster planning and response.

Indiana Code provides that real property parcels with delinquent taxes due will be offered for a tax certificate sale by the County Treasurer.
Auction sales are held at the Scott County Courthouse, Commissioners Room #128 in Scottsburg, Indiana. Successful bidders will obtain a lien on the parcel through a Tax Sale Certificate issued by the County Auditor. Property owners have one year from the date of the sale to “redeem” their property by paying the amounts prescribed by Indiana Code which includes interest on the amounts paid by the successful bidder/investor. If the property is not redeemed within one year of the auction date, the successful bidder may obtain a tax deed to the property by following procedure as outlined in the Indiana Code. The above referenced is a brief summary of the process. Note the reference to Indiana Code throughout – investor/bidders should obtain legal advice as you work your way through the Tax Sale process. Specific information, including a listing of available properties in the Scott County auction, can be obtained at SRI-Tax Sale or contact the Treasurer’s office at 812-752-8414.

The Environmental Department of the Scott County Health Department investigates and mitigates environmental and public health issues concerning Scott County. To accomplish this, the section must effectively incorporate the practices and procedures necessary to ensure that the federal, state, and local laws and ordinances concerning the environmental quality of Scott County are met. These efforts are designed to reduce hazards including solid waste, chemical or biological agents and to maintain the quality of our land and water.
Indiana Laws Rules and Regulations https://www.in.gov/health/food-protection/laws-rules-and-regulations/

Environmental hazard Investigations are conducted by the Environmental Health Specialist for any condition that could impact the public health or environmental quality of Scott County. Such conditions include hazardous material releases, natural or technological disasters, indoor air pollution, water contamination, animals, trash and debris and failed onsite sewage disposal systems. These investigations can be initiated from reports filed by citizens or other local, state or federal agencies. Violation letters may be issued and corrective actions are initiated because of these investigations. Court actions may be a part of this process. Citizens with any environmental concern should contact the environmental section. Reports may be made anonymously.
Our onsite sewage disposal program follows a cradle to grave paradigm. The Environmental Health Specialist conducts site evaluations. Soil scientist provides analysis for each new construction and many repair systems. This procedure includes producing a detailed soil profile description and a topographic characterization for the site. Using the size of the home and the site/soil profile information, they can tailor an onsite sewage disposal system to each individual site. Permits, consultations and inspections are provided for new construction and repair onsite sewage disposal systems. Educating homeowners on system operation has become a priority. Homeowners who are interested in the operation or location of their system should contact our section. We can arrange onsite consultations or provide owners with diagrams of their system, if available.
